I don´t use BibTeX but the native bibliography provided in LyX/LaTeX like
this:

\bibitem[Frati et al. 1997]{FRA97}Frati, F., Simon, C., Sullivan, J.,
Swofford, D. L. (1997). Evolution
of the Mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase II Gene in Collembola. \emph{J.
Mol.
