Path prefix empty

Hi, I just compiled 1.5.0beta on Ubuntu (first time I've compiled anything from source -- very cool). However, my path prefix box was empty and so I had no output to pdf. So, I put /usr/bin:/usr/local/bin in the path and setup pdflatex $$i extra flag 'latex' and setup the viewer as evince for
