Paul, Thaniks for the suggestion. However I am using absolute path (/home/ johwhi/.lyx/templates). BUT, you gave me an idea. I moved the lyx file and the associated pdf to a non-hidden path (/home/documents/lyx and it opens fine (shows the graphic). However if I point in preferences to the

A float leaves to LaTeX the decision of where to put the image. This is not a trivial decision and in most cases, LaTeX does a better job than you at balancing text distribution when an image is inserted. Even if you want to put an image in a particular place, a float allows you to do it.
