The contrast voltage appears to be too low if memory serves the voltage swing
needs to be greater than 300mV, the manual indicates the swing should be around
4V (pg 38). It could be that VR1 needs cleaning or at least checking out or
c106/c105 might have problems.

What about voltages at test points? And as a precaution I would change all
black capacitors on the board, they are almost certainly bad
It might be the contrast dial. I have an NEC unit that goes blank until I turn
it all the way up. You should be able to check that with a multi-meter.
Could be the actual screen though.

Ther screen wasn't working before I started the recapping and battery
replacement, so I don't think I made it any worse.
And to be clear, I can't get any response from the screen at all no matter
what I do: No flickering or darkening or flashes.
