Popularity means another Buddhist move
by Amy Binns, Yorkshire Post, March 9, 2005

A BUDDHIST group, which has outgrown its humble terrace house in Keighley,
hopes to move to a larger premises in Skipton.

Keighley, UK -- Keighley Buddhist Centre on Skipton Road was opened less than
four years ago, but is already too small for the large numbers attracted to its
courses in meditation and spirituality.

Monk Kelsang Tsewang said the group had found a buyer for its four-bedroomed
terrace and had raised an additional £50,000 to buy somewhere bigger. It is now
looking at a large building in Skipton.

He said: "We only have four people living here full-time, but when we hold day
courses we often have more than 30 people.

"Our rooms aren't big enough and we can't comply with all the regulations here,
like disabled access.

"We want somewhere bigger where we can welcome more people."
The group has grown substantially since its began as a handful of people
meeting in Oxenhope in 1984.

Its first property was the Skipton Road house in Keighley, which it later left
to buy Dobroyd Castle, on the edge of the moors above Todmorden.

The dilapidated Victorian mansion had been used as a boys' secure school, and
was extensively renovated and renamed the Losang Dragpa centre.

But numbers in the Keighley district continued to grow, prompting the Losang
Dragpa Buddhists to start another offshoot group in the town. By chance, their
original home was on the market, so they moved there once again.

Now they are again hoping to find somewhere more substantial.

Monk Tsewang, who also teaches at evening classes around the district, said:
"We really need somewhere we can welcome people more easily. We may also have
more permanent residents."
