You could use the time machine app to make a back up on to an external. You could also if you have it use CCC and then use the migration wizard to transfer your stuff from there. I actually did not know that was possible until I did it one day when I was doing a clean install a while ago. On F

Sean, The problem is that there is no one specific cause for busy messages. They can be caused by large folders, particularly in column view. How large is your documents folder, or how many files does it have? I am using an upgraded copy of Mavrics and notice no consistent Finder busy messages.
