After upgrading to Mountain Lion I experienced a problem with the apple
printer driver for my canon IPC 4300.
This was a third party driver I downloaded from apple whilst I had Lion. At
the time there was no Cannon driver available for OS Lion .

I suspected the ML upgrade but in the end it had nothing to do with this.
I reproduce the problem below and the solution in case it helps anybody
else.

1. Problem - When attempting to print to the printer ML announces. "Printer
Proxy launched in the background".
You then get a message "Excuse me Printer Proxy requires your attention".
Switching to the printer proxy window produces the message
"Printer Proxy has no windows".

Restarting the printer, Deleting printer jobs, restarting Mac and deleting
and reinstalling the printer produces no improvement.

After enlisting sighted help I was told that all that is in the Printer
Proxy window is a graphic of a printer with an exclamation mark over it.
A check of the printer revealed paper in the paper cassette and full ink
tanks.

Resolution
I took out my trusty old XP Netbook and installed the Windows Cannon IPC
4300 driver and connected the Printer.
On attempting to print the driver instantly told me that the top sheet
feeder needed paper inserting. I never normally print from this feeder as it
is intended for envelopes etc. The paper source is determined by the
printer driver so it is a mystery how this got changed. I reset the paper
source to normal on the netbook and the printer now works fine.

Unfortunately the Printer driver produced by Apple is remarkably
uninformative about this problem, simply flashing up a picture with an
exclamation mark alongside it is not particularly helpful.

If anybody else gets a printer proxy has no windows message it is best to
cancel, try to reprint and before pressing OK go carefully through all the
printer properties to try and see if there is anything odd in settings.
