Thanks Isaac - I had looked there, but it appeared that the default was the
deleted messages folder, when I wanted trash. It wasn’t really clear regarding
folders on the phone, and those on the server, anyway, with a bit of
experimenting, I got there, and it works fine now, so again, thanks -

When I try to move a message from my in box to trash, on my iPhone 5, it tells
me that it was unable to move the message to the trash folder; I can move mail
to other folders, so why not trash? -

You can rather swipe up to delete the message if you are using ios6 or double
tap edit and select every message and then on the very left it will either rbe
archive or delete. either done will do what you want.
