I want to download VLC media player but when I am in an edit area to enter
my e-mail address and try to write I just get a sound indicating I cannot
write, yet voice over says you are in an edit area. how do I overcome this
problem?

Turn quicknav off with the left and right arrow keys together. Having this on
during a web page or other html content will prevent you from typing in edit
fields. Either that or interact with the edit field with down and right arrows
together.
