Hi Esther

Thank you very much for your help. I think I may have also stumbled upon a
similar article. I am trying to follow the instructions to clear out stored
certificates, but can't move away from the general tab in java preferences.
Could you please give me any tips on how to do this?

Any help is greatfully appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Paula

Re:technical help]

Hi Paula,

You probably need someone who is actually running Blackboard currently to
help troubleshoot this, but I did a web search and found this support page
titled, "Troubleshooting Blackboard Java Issues":
https://elearn.usu.edu/java/java_tutorial.html

>From the section of the error message you give, I'd guess that your
application is no longer certified. That's the part about "Unsigned
application requesting unrestricted access to system and signed resource".
While it's common that problems may occur if you don't have the latest
version of java installed, currently, I believe that you should have this in
place from running software update, and it's quite unlikely that you need to
go back to an older version. (Also, on the Mac you don't need to delete
older versions of the Java).

I suspect that the relevant portion of the troubleshooting page is the
section on "Troubleshoot Java Security Settings":
<begin quote>
If Java is installed but you are still having problems with Java
functionality in Blackboard, there might be a problem with the Java security
certificate settings on your computer. Here are two things to look for:

. The application digital signature has not been allowed to run.
. The certificate information stored on the comptuer does not match
the current certificate.
Please see the following link for more details.
<end quote>
I've pasted in the link for "Troubleshooting Java certificate problems in
Blackboard" below:
https://elearn.usu.edu/java/clearing-certificates.html

I'd try to go back to java preferences and undo any of the attempts you made
to point to an earlier version of java, then go through the two steps of
trying to run the certificate again, and check the security tab of java
preferences to clear out your current stored certificates so they can be
renewed. If you feel nervous doing that, you could wait to see whether
someone else who has current experience both in using Blackboard and in java
can respond to your questions.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
