I've found when reading .pdf documents in iBooks, the page number is
spoken every time the page turns. This doesn't happen with .epup
books and I've not found a way to turn it off.
Although you tune them out after a while, I still choose to creat .epup files.

Open iTunes and hit cmd-o to add files to your library. Select the file or
folder containing the PDFs in question and add them the way you would music,
and they'll appear in the proper category.
You can also open PDFs in Safari on the iPad, and they can be added through a
button on that
You just add them to your iTunes library and tell iTunes which ones to sort.
In my case, iTunes syncs all my ebooks. I haven't actually read a PDF yet, but
I plan to once I get my books organized. I have over 1,000 to sort into
collections.
