Apparently I am searching in the wrong places...Not long ago someone indicated
a key combination of cmd+shift+t to quickly add an application to the dock.
This was very helpful as I was looking for the same thing. To my question, is
there a list somewhere of these sorts of key

The Command+Shift+T shortcut is described in the VoiceOver Getting Started
Guide for both Snow Leopard and Lion, under Chapter 3. Learning Mac OS X
Basics in the sections about Finder shortcuts and the Dock. This is the Guide
that you can access as the last option of the VoiceOver
