I assume, but am not 100% sure that this is a 64-bit machine. I couldn't
ascertain this when I went into the "About This Mac" option.

You can hit the keys 3 2 together and hold them down while you start up. I
believe this will work. There is a way to permanently go to 43 bit though but I
cannot remember the terminal comand.
