Have you tried a permissions repair in utilities - disc utility app?
This can often sort out problems like this.

Have you, by any chance, been adding shortcuts in System Preferences then
pressed Cmd-q to quit? You could, accidentally, have used Cmd-q for a different
shortcut and this would prevent it from working normally. Check in the
application menu that Quit is not dimmed.

I don't think it is the keyboard then, because if that was damaged, it would

mail or text edit.
maybe the Q on my keyboard is not working? but when I use keyboard help it will
say Q.

If I didn't know better, I would swear you were pressing command W instead of

aps on the mac. when I press command Q I go into a interactive help screen.
from there I can not get back to a mail message or a file in text edit. I can
only quit the aps by using force quit. I have rest
