Stuart,
Although most Macs running OS X seldom if ever suffer the kind of system
crash you describe, a few do, including mine ( a one year old Power Mac G4).
It has crashed about 20 times while asleep, at irregular intervals. I have
installed all Apple software updates, repaired disk permissions,
FWIW, my PM G4 dual 1.4 Firewire 800 (2 1/2 yr. old) has NEVER been
able to go into sleep mode and return. No matter what I have tried

I have a HP 3570c scanner that I have used for several months ... no
problems. This week I upgraded my OS from 10.2.8 to 10.3.9. Now my
eMac does not recognize the scanner even though it shows up in the
system profile under USB devices. I went to HP's support page for help
but found nothing.

You may want to look at your activity monitor to see if there is
anything using alot of processor. Mine gets pretty warm on occasion.
Usually when I am running Virtual PC.
Restart your ibook and see if it cools any.
I really don't mind this too much in the winter time.
