I recommend reading the Migrating to Jaguar article on page 65 of the Oct
MacWorld before installing OS 10.2.

The installer has three choices: Clean Install, Upgrade, and Archive &
Install. If you already have an older version of OSX, the default will be
Upgrade. There is no explanation of what Archive & Install does, what you
should do afterward, and what it is good for.

So I used the default Upgrade (going from OS 10.1.5), and have experienced a
few crashes in the few weeks since then. These are real Unix crashes, where
I have use the Off switch to turn it off and reboot. I reboot using Cmd-S to
run fsck -y to see what damage was done. If applications have been open,
there is always damage to repair.

The MacWorld article explains how to use Archive & Install. It's a Clean
Install with quite a bit of work on your part afterward, to transfer your
old stuff from the Archived System to the new System, but it supposedly
prevents crashes such as I have had.
