(I revbumped, since that resolved the locally broken port in one of my MP
installations.)

If it timed out then the step would be marked "Exception" rather than
"Failed". To cause a timeout, a step would have to produce no output for
20 minutes.
The error message for the first failure is:
could not create lock file: fopen(/opt/local/libexec/php/pear/.lock):
failed to open stream: P
