Objective-C error for GNUmail install attempt

After updating macports under Mac X.6.5 I tried to install GNUmail 1.2.0pre3. This failed because gnustep-base install failed, because, according to the logfile, Objective-C doesn't seem to work properly. Should I do a ports install of 'objc 3.2.8'? There already are 'libobjc' files in /usr/
