Minor update: the TextEdit file is actually saved (whew!) but hangs after
printing; Gnuplot still hangs on "File -> Save As" but I suppose I could
always do a screen-grab until this defect is fixed.
What beats me is why "About This Mac" no longer works...

Did you try to launch the binary from the terminal and see which errors it
spits out?
