earlier, the
mysql-error log does show the creation of the sock file on the last line after
restarting.
Is there a process that might destroy it after it's created?

Switching the location creates the same result. /private/tmp/mysqld.sock.lock
is created, but not the sock file.

As mentioned in my post, I can open mysql -u root -p with no problem. MySQL is
running, it's just the sock file that is not being created.

Is it just me, or has the MySQL port turned into a horror show? I've been
following the MySQL HowTo (https://trac.macports.org/wiki/howto/MySQL) to
install mysql57-server under El Capitan. The problems start with Step2: Create
a Database. BTW, this is a clean install of MacPorts on this disk.
