selecting it in the player itself brings up an error and says that VLC cannot
play the content.

Open terminal and type the following:
1. cd folder_name
2. ls >folder_name.m3u.
This will create a playlist of all the .mp3's in a folder.

Well my vlc is old and decrepit now, but I just go command O and choose the
folder I want and off it goes.
Theres' no guess work. If you have random turned on by accident, press command
Z and your files will play in order.

There is a built-in sftp server if you turn it on in System Preferences
-> Sharing -> Options and check the checkbox that says "share files and
folders via FTP". In there you can also share via SMB and AFP.

current Microsoft codecs, but will do older flavors of Microsoft's DRM.
For newer Microsoft codec support you can use Flip For Mac but this does
