The string that causes the problem is in the subject of many of them, so you'll be affected even if you don't open them. The best thing to do is just use a synthesizer that is NOT the Alex voice or any of the older Mac voices (Fred, Ralph, etc). This bug doesn't affect any Nuance voice at all, o

OK, so it looks like com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd deadlocks when this happens. Anyone else want to try deliberately reproducing this, and then, using Terminal, try “sudo killall -9 com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd”? You should find that it comes back again shortly after you execute that
