I'm literally at my wit's end about how to figure out the following.

I have a Behringer X32 rack mixer. It's a wonderful piece of gear, great for everything from pro-am home recording to live stage work. It interfaces with Windows and Mac via USB and shows eight ports in both directions--that's four stereo pairs both in and out. But here's the rub: In Windows, you can only see the four stereo pairs, and you select which one(s) you want to use for input and output. They don't have to match, and that's all OK. But on the Mac side, you can see all thirty-two ports, but only eight of them--the eight you have assigned to the USB socket--actually do anything for you. In the Audio-MIDI Setup program found in the Utilities folder, you can easily and accessibly select which ports you want to use or to which you want your audio programs like Logic, GarageBand, Reaper, Zoom, Audacity, Pro Tools, etc., to have access and basically ignore all the other ports (which you can't use anyway). However, the input side is where the trouble is. It is not possible to select any of the thirty-two ports, accessibly or not, even though you can check the input tab, making you think you can do this. Without being able to choose which port(s) you want to use for input, you can't get anything out of the mixer and into your audio application of choice. The online research about this has revealed that it has to be set up in the topmost item in the ports list table, something to do with streaming, but I can't figure this out at all.

If you've ever done anything like this, worked with multi-channel audio devices interfacing them with MacOS where you have to select which port(s) you want to use for input and output, I'd love to hear from you. Other devices of this type are things like the Behringer UMD-404 with four ports, The Behringer M32 Producer (which is essentially the X32 rack with sliders and buttons like a real mixer would have), or the L20 by some other company that makes a device that works like the Behringer 32-port devices but with fewer bells and whistles. I've asked about this on numerous email lists and online forums and have gotten all kinds of answers that do not apply, so I thought I'd try here.

Thanks in advance.
