When I formatted a 500gig drive, I think I used the options under
the Partition tab and set seceuriy to 100%. It did not take long to format.
Now am trying to format a new WD Passport 1t drive using the same
options. Its going to take 17 hours?!?

there should be an erase tab when you select the drive from the table
present disk utility application in the utilities folder.
Choosing this will allow you to format it and you have several options
you can choose from the popup menu.
