you can close the people section in the app switcher. To do this:
go to settingsmail, contacts, calendars. there's a section that says
show in app switcher changing these options to off will take that
section away.
I've not read whether this increases battery life.

the feature under Settings General like I can on my iPad Mini with Retina
also running iOS 8. Didn't think this was a hardware specific feature so don't
understand this at all.
