If you have a solid state drive it will automatically be converted to
the new system. Regular hard drives will remain as they are, whether
you reformat makes no difference. Having said that, I always prefer to
reformat and do a clean install of any new major operating system release.

If your Mac has the correct hardware to accept the new APFS, then it will be
done automatically by the installer. Otherwise, you're file system will be
left alone. Your Mac must have an SSD, not a spinner or a Fusion drive, just
an SSD at this point.

If I upgrade my mac to high sierra, will I get the new apple filesystem?
Or, do I need to reformat the drive with the new filesystem before doing the
install.
