Hi Will,

We seem to have been crossing posts; see my last reply to find out how
to use mouse keys. Briefly: you turn on Mouse Keys in the Universal
Access menu under System Preferences, but using the Mouse & Trackpad
tab. There's a check box option there to let you turn it on/off by
pressing the option key 5 times. I check the box to show Universal
Access status on the menu bar (this is also available from the
"Seeing" tab for VoiceOver) so if I need to check whether Mouse Keys
is on or off I can go to the status menu bar (VO-M twice or Control-F8

and arrow over to Universal Access menu). When you activate mouse
keys you move your mouse with key presses. These used to be the arrow
keys on the embedded numeric keypad, where "7 8 9" matched the same
keys on the top row of the keyboard. The other key mappings are "4 5
6" maps to "u i o" and "1 2 3" maps to "j k l". The "5" in the center
of the 3x3 block of numbers is current position. To move your mouse
up, down, left, right, or diagonally by one screen pixel you press the
key above, below, to the left, right, or diagonally from the current
position "5" key. On the keyboard that means you press the key to the
left of the "i" key (or "u") to move left, and the key to right (or
"o") to move right.

Up: "8"
Down: "k"
Left: "u"
RIght: "o"
and the corresponding diagonal movements:
Up and left: "7"
Up and right: "9"
Down and left: "j"
Down and right: "l"

Mouse keys move 1 pixel in each direction. They're really used for
precise mouse positioning, so they're not good for large moves. The
advantage is that they give you exact control of moving your cursor in
x or y, and if you calibrate the offset once for your computer (such
as 49 key presses to the right of the "Sample" text will be centered
on the flash player control) you can just turn them on and count key
presses. Remember to turn them off again when you're done. (I do this
by pressing option 5 times).

Cheers,

Esther
