I usually prefer list view for most of my finder folders, though I understand where you are coming from as well. I would just keep the way you use to do, an if in column view I thought VO would report you if the folder that you are focused in is expanded or not. I could be wrong about that,

Hi, Are you aware of the command arrow down shortcut to open the selected folder? And, command up arrow to return you to the parent folder while in list view? That’s my preferred method of navigating finder windows. This is normal Finder behavior and not unique to VO. Best, —k Faith doesn’t
