Hi, everybody,

I just had a really quick question. I regularly used, and sometimes still use,
the Vision Australia podcasts for learning various aspects of the Mac. He
mentions on there that he has a nature sounds app (with instrumental music,
fountains, birds, etc). it's extremely pleasant and relaxing, as he
demonstrated the way to adjust the Mac volume separate from the VoiceOver
volume. My completely frivolous question is, does anyone know of this app or
one like it?

And on a completely unrelated note, my external hard drive may simply be dead.
It was unable to partition because it "could not unmount," and when it does try
and copy files it will get part of the way through then say there was an error
and the problem may be temporary, but I can try a repair. The repair failed
for whatever reason, a few times. The latest error I got was that it could not
write to a block of the drive or something like that. I'm really not sure what
to do about it. I bought it back in November. I always thought it was just a
problem with VoiceOver, but now I suspect it's more a problem with the drive
itself. it's a Western Digital 5000gb Mypassport. I did notice my computer
tries to about half lock up when I click on the partition tab, though. I
thought it was just Voiceover hanging, but of course I couldn't really explain
that to the tech support guy. He thought it might be a faulty USB connection.

Curious, curious. I was going to try starting my computer up with the STartup
disk, as I read on one of the Mac Support pages, but that never seemed to work
to get Voiceover running. That is, I would hold down "c" with the CD in, but
the computer would go straight to the login screen. I would hold down shift, I
think it is, and I'm sure it worked, because it never went to the login screen
(that is, VO never came on), but I was also never able to get VO running. I
read that if partitioning won't work the normal way that sometimes it will work
from the startup disk, as if you were going to partition your hard drive, but
instead choosing the external drive.

Again, the two subject lines are completely unrelated. I've tried to be as
clear and concise as possible; it really is a confusing/frustrating issue.

Thanks so much, guys.

Harry
