Hi Christina. It's been a while since I moved to gMail, so I could certainly be wrong here, but I believe the only way to move a mailbox from the "on my mac" section to the gMail section is to use drag and drop. When I first made the transition to gMail, I found the following article from TidBi

Hi, All your mailboxes are listed in a table. There are hot keys for the most commonly used ones, such as Command-1 for the OUtbox, Command-3 for Drafts, and Command-6 for junk. To get to the rest, I interact with the Mailboxes table and type the first letter or two of the one I want. The
