what i do is just press command c for copy and then arrow to the group
you want it in and press command v fo paste. hope that helps, max

If you're using Lion, this procedure is much improved from what it was in SL.
1. select the "All Contacts" group.
2. Now, focus on the contact you wish to add to the already created group.
