If you try simply ripping them as audio files for example MP3,
Does that work at all?

One more further question to this.
I have some audiobooks i want to rip from cd.
But some of them are drm protected i guess because there is a player for the
book and some other stuff on the first cd of the book.
Its not an mp3 book, just a normal cd book.
Is it better to use

Thank you, yes I wouldn’t be surprised if the discs are dusty as they have been
in storage for a while. I will keep a soft cloth handy for cleaning the CDs
before I put them in the DVD drive. The drive should be clean as it is new.

Yeah probably dust!
They still make cleaning cd's to clean the CD/DVD burner out there.
Also the cd it self could have some "schmutz" on it which usually can be
cleaned.

I don’t think that it’s normal, but it’s not really uncommon. What is likely
happening is that the CD is having a hiccup when it is reading the CD DB
information at the header of the CD. By putting it in the next time, it must
have got a better read.
