using wifi?
The last time I did a migration it required the older machine to be in target
disk mode which is a case of turning the machine completely

Hi,
Both methods will work fine. Whether you use Migration Assistant or an
up-to-date Time Machine backup. If you are setting up a new computer and you
have the up-to-date Time Machine backup, the new computer will end up exactly
the same as the old one including all files and settings.

I have never made nor used any time machine backups so cannot speak to how it
works.
However, when I purchased my new Mac, a couple of months ago, I simply
connected it to my old Mac and the migration assistant worked perfectly, the
first time.
Since then I have used the
