Hello Eileen, While I have not yet encountered your particular problem, I have experienced update or component level installation problems with iTunes for Windows.
Unless you have signed up for the new Music streaming service, there is really no difference between the current version of iTunes for Windows and the previous version. However, if you just want to have the latest version, simply create a restore point on your PC, before installing, just as a precaution, then go ahead and update to the latest version again. The error message that you are receiving when manually checking for updates in no way effects the usability or integrity of iTunes. It may, as you state, be a glitch in the program, if so, it is one that Apple is not going to admit unless or until there is a fix or unless thousands complain publically on the web. As I am certain Apple has already told you, for the best installation experience, make sure that the current version of iTunes is closed before installing the next version. Whenever I encounter an unexpected error in iTunes for Windows, the absolute first thing I do is perform a Google search on the web for similar instances. I have almost always been rewarded by others confirming my issue. Good luck and let us know what happens, should you decide to update a second time. Hi, I’m running ITunes on my Win 8.1 64B computer and when I installed the update last week to ITunes, it downloaded and installed fine. The problem is that in the latest ITunes version , when I go to the ITunes help menu and do a “check for updates” I get the following dialog/error message every time: “The ITunes update server could not be contacted. Please check your internet connection or try again later.” My internet connection is working perfectly fine. I’ve run diagnostics under ITunes help as well and it comes back with everything in working order. I called Apple Accessibility and I did with tech support uninstall ITunes (all associated programs in the correct order) and then re-downloaded & re-installed ITunes. What is weird is that this time when I started up ITunes it appears that it has gone back to a previous version and wants me to again download and install ITunes. I don’t want to do it since once I get the latest version running, I’m worried that its going to return to saying I cannot connect to their update server. So, has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas on the correct fix for it? I’m worried that I’m waiting on Apple to put in a fix for ITunes for Windows. Yes, I have a Mac laptop, but my comfort is still with Windows and its where I do my backups, etc. Yes, I have a working copy of ITunes, but why shouldn’t I be able to install the most up-to-date without problems?? I posted this question to the other list I’m subscribed to the other day, and no one had any information that could help. Thanks for any definitive help.
