I restarted my Mac in order to repair permissions. I could not do this, as the
button was dimmed. I then tried to repair the disk. I was informed that “lion
file system repair was not supported.” Is there a remedy for this?

A great many functions in os10 under preferences etc. are handled under
the hood by utilities one can also access in terminal. Diskutility is the
one that would appear to be the one the mac uses for repair permmissions
and disk repair.
Here is the command in terminal to repair permissions:

Did you do a disk verification first? Do you have a back up system drive
you can boot form to try running disk utility from it?

I do have a back up drive, I decided to do a smart update using super duper
just a few hours ago. I actually just did a restore from that drive which is a
passport for Mac.
Now, I can’t even turn VO on when attempt to access the recovery partition
using command r at start up.

The problem is when you do a clone, the recovery partition is not cloned.
Try holding the option key down at startup and hit the right arrow key and then
enter. Make sure the external drive is not connected when you do this.
