I don't have any solution except using something like Google Chrome.
What I can tell you is that on Mojave witch i have been testing, the problem
seems to have been resolved.

Hello,
I am running the latest High Sierra on my 2017 iMac. The audible web site keeps
hanging with Safari constantly saying busy. Go to search for an audio book by
say a specified author and then try to access the search results. This all
worked fine last year with El Capitan on an older iMac.
