I don't think this would cause the problem you describe, but is cursor tracking
possibly turned off? Ctrl-option-shift-3 toggles this. Or have you changed any
setings in voiceover utility?

You should leave it on unless there is a specific reason that you need it
off. In Finder, it will make your life a lot easier with it on.

I cannot open anything on my mac. If I try, I get a finder window, and
voiceover says, all my files. If I open something using the applications
folder, it works but I get what I want to open but also whatever is next to it

pane, there is a popup menu that says, new finder windows open with. Change
that from all my files to the item that has your home
