I can’t seem to correct it. I went in and unchecked checkboxes but I still have

characters attached to them, and that was what caused them. That was what

In VoiceOver utility, under speech category, set all your voices to Alex and
Alex to be your default voice. It seems as if somehow the announcements are
made by a different voice rather than default.

Alternatively, use a Windows computer, or iOS device with any voice other than
Alex, to delete the messages that contain the string which crashes Mac speech
synthesizers.

my iPhone. So by switching over to my phone to deal with mail, I was able to

In fact, I think it affects Apple voices in general as I use Fred and it shut
that voice down too. Switching to a French voice didn’t help either. I wound up
restarting my Mac four times before I got rid of all the offending messages.
