Attention should be off. It is usually off by default if VO is on. VO will
announce when your face is positioned correctly. As mentioned, hold the iPhone
about a foot from your face with the screen facing you and you should hear VO
announce all necessary steps to follow.

I just purchased an xr last week and need help doing it. I don’t mind putting
in the passcode each time but that’s not really what I wanted. Can someone
describe what you have to do to make it work?
Go to settings, faceID and pass code, tap setup face id, and hold the phone
about 10 inches away from your face, and rotate your head in a circular motion,
voiceover will guide you after that.
