a sighted user's perspective what it would look like if the Time Machine
drive were unavailable--like maybe a red icon or something in the Extras

Go a head and hide the drives.
Then when you want to show them just hit.
command shift c this will show all your connected hard drives and you can pick
the one you want to look at.
You can also find this command under the “go” menu

I currently have all disks showing in Finder on my wife's machine, but
somehow, and nobody seems to know how this happens, drives get renamed
to strange things. I suspect a cat is involved, walking on the RETURN
key, pressing more keys, then walking on the RETURN key again to
