I am pretty sure that when I first set up my airport extreme there was a place
for coices re: handling frequency. But now I can't find this anywhere in
airport utility. Can anybody tell me how to find this?

Options button. That should give you the info you want.

Never mind. I bought mine in April 2013 so I think it's the newest airport
extreme which has simultaneous frequencies. But I could have sworn I saw some
kind of setting for that in airport utility at the time and the way my network
is acting at the moment I wonder if it is really doing both

Are they older iPads? The older ones use the G networks which have less
channels to choose from and interference is more common. The Dual Bandwidth
ones have been around for a while and the settings I directed you to are for
those units too.

Thanks Tim. I don't know why I didn't see it before. And I also seem to have
solved my speaker distortion problems. I left the 2.4ghz at automatic for the
channel but changed the 5ghz channel setting to one of the higher selections:
