I would have a headset or speakers plugged it as backup. You can go under VO utilties and control what output VO can come out. For example, If you are watching a movie on your tv, you can just hear VO on your headphone. Just an idea. Also there is a way to mute VO speech too for trackpad usage y

I like circumaural headphones which are the kind which have large circular pads that go around the ears rather than press against them. I also like closed back because I often times use them to block out other noise. If you like that combination then you might want to try the Sennheiser HD250

They are apple branded so you can get replacements that are exactly the same from any apple store. That said depending on your taste in music I find most "ear bud" style headphones to be lacking in any sort of real response as well as making my ears sore :( I much prefer in ear style
