I have just tried using iBooks for the first time as well. I know this may
seem like a sort of basic suggestion, but the first time I opened iBooks, I had
the same problem. I closed and reopened the app, and now the problem has gone
away. You might give that a try.

things to my library. You might want to try trashing all preferences that start
with com.apple.ibooks and see if that helps.

Yes, clean installs are best done clean. It’s a pain, but it’s always worth
doing the clean part. There will be corrupt preferences and long-dead traces
of previous crashes or other problems that would be swept up by simply cloning
the Library folders.
