Looked at a friend's iPad Air this weekend to see if it could be
straightened out.
Once you start interacting with it, it becomes possessed. It will
open apps at random, play music, bring up edit fields and it even
becomes almost impossible to turn it off.

It sounds like something is physically wrong with the touch screen, similar to
what can happen to the Trackpad on a laptop. If this is the case, it will need
to be taken to an Apple Authorized repair place. You could try restoring it
using iTunes but if the touch screen is the problem,

That was my thoughts too. Wonder how much this repair might cost.
Its a 16gig wifi only model so not likely to be worth it.

A suggestion: make sure you are using an Apple genuine power supply. Other
supplies don't produce good DC current which can interfere with the touchscreen.
