gets me to the top or bottom of a list respectively.

What about function key and up arrow or
Function key ctrl up arrow,
They should take you to the top of the in box etc.

Up of course goes to top, and down to the bottom. If this doesn't help,

I use classic view in mail and list view in finder and it works. You may have
to interact with the list.
