Yes, that was done on purpose because it makes it easier for the average user
to remember changing between grades of Braille by using the letter "G" with a
chord.

either contracted or uncontracted braille. This allows people to use
contractions, but in the end it just seems to over complicate things if you
have to switch between the two while typing.
