Would you be able to outline exactly where this issue occurs? If I
remember correctly, the default behavior of Voiceover is to speak
every character that you type.
I used VO-V to set the verbosity preferences to what I believe is the
default, and tried it out. Hitting command-N

I have done the quick start tutorial and read the Getting Started
