Thank you for your reply. I tried that and still got the same results.
When I turn VO back on I still get the same message. Any Ideas what I
am doing wrong or what else I could try? I am also using SL.

This just happened to me last night!
Find the pdf then turn off voiceOver and hit command down arrow to launch it.
Step#2 after its up turn on voiceOver again and it works fine! :)
Whats weird is that after doing this it opens up just fine every time after
doing this! Go figure!

I cannot open two PDf files with VO. When I try to open each file, I get a
message that says that preview has quit unexpectedly. When I turn VO off and
have a sighted person open the file there is no problems.
One file is 1.9 MB and the other is 3 mb.
