I stumbled across this this morning when I decided to play around with this again and thought I'd share it. You have to check the checkbox that allows bluetooth to show up under the menu bar, then when you select it under the menu under extra's all your devices show up as submenu's, which then

It's under the bluetooth option under system preferences; there's a checkbox that you can tab to that says "show bluetooth in menubar,"which is unchecked by default, and you just check it and it will come up in the menu's that you would VO+space twice on to do things like check your battery life
