xterm cant escape so my cursor is homeless (echo -e "\033[H")

I just tried to do some basic cursor movement using ansi sequences, but they don't work in the standard xterm. I know vim and other things work but they may be using the panels or some other library. Is this just not implemented, or does it use something completely non ANSI/VTxx? _
